Special Considerations for ELLs

ESEA allows ELL students who have been in the United States for less than one year to not participate in the English language arts portion of the state test.

ESEA allows all students to be assessed in their native language for up to three years on state tests, if the state provides that option. After three years, the school district may determine that it is in the best interests of the student to maintain testing in his or her native language. Testing may occur in the student’s native language for up to two additional years (Title I, 115 STAT. 1451).
