In 2010, the National Governor’s Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers developed new content standards in reading and mathematics.
Forty six states have adopted the new standards, known as the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).
The CCSS pose benefits and challenges for ELLs with disabilities:

The CCSS are more rigorous than most state standards, but are fewer in number so that teachers can devote more time to teaching the standards.
To reach proficiency on the CCSS, students must have a grasp of the English language, as well as English Language Arts and mathematics content. ELLs with disabilities may have difficulty reaching proficiency due to language and disability-related barriers.
