Who should make accommodations decisions?
Should decisions about accommodations for content tests be made
separately from decisions about accommodations for ELP tests?
Members of the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) make decisions about accommodations for instruction and assessment. It is recommended that team members include individuals familiar with the student’s English language needs. For example, the student’s English Language Development teacher may provide valuable insight to assist the IEP team in making decisions.
Accommodations may differ for content area and English Language Proficiency (ELP) tests. Because content area tests and ELP tests are intended to measure different knowledge and skills, some accommodations that are appropriate for one may be inappropriate for the other because they interfere with the skill that the test is intended to measure.
