Interpreting and using assessment results
To successfully interpret assessment results, the intended purpose of the assessment must be considered.
The purpose of state content assessments (including general assessments and alternate assessments) is to:
- Maintain accountability for the educational achievement of all students, including students from traditionally low-performing groups
- Provide an accurate representation of performance at the school, district, and state levels
- Evaluate educational programming
The purpose of state English language proficiency assessments is to:
- Maintain accountability for the English proficiency of ELLs, including ELLs with disabilities, in listening, speaking, reading, and writing
- Provide an accurate representation of the English language proficiency of ELLs, including ELLs with disabilities, at the school, district, and state levels
- Measure individual student progress in reaching proficiency in all language areas
